From the Plot menu:
As each isodose label is printed, the area it will occupy is tested for collision with a mathematical region which accumulates the printing area plus a small surrounding margin for all of the labels. If a label will overlap an existing label, its printing position is shifted along the isodose line until an unoccupied area is found. Note: the interactive labeling sliders are easier to access than these menu items.

As each isodose curve is printed, potential labeling points are cached and sorted according to distance from the center of the diagram. When certain labels are printed, their preferred printing positions on the isodose curve are calculated as a fractional offset into that cache of points. A narrow setting tends to pull those labels towards the center of the diagram. Note: the interactive labeling sliders are easier to access than these menu items.
